About POMS
The Plowright One Health Mentoring Scheme (POMS) is an international mentoring network established at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) by Professor Fiona Tomley CBE. It was created following her receipt of the 2023/24 Plowright Prize, awarded by RCVS Knowledge in recognition of her contributions to the understanding and control of infectious diseases in poultry. The £100,000 prize provided the foundation for a mentoring network supporting future leaders in infectious disease and One Health research.
Founded on the principle that addressing complex challenges affecting animal, human and environmental health requires strong relationships across disciplines, regions and sectors, POMS is aimed at “empowering researchers with an international and collaborative network through which to address One Health issues.”
The first POMS cohort launched in 2025, bringing together researchers from a wide range of geographical settings, with a particular focus on strengthening connections between the UK and low- and middle-income countries. It creates opportunities to exchange knowledge, build lasting collaborations and support the next generation of One Health research leaders.
